This Mad Max inspired sculpture started out as a bare plastic skull from a dollar store. My preliminary step was to gather materials to transform this ordinary object into a movie prop fit for a closeup. I visited my local antique shop and came out with a box of rusty bike gears, old chains, random obsolete tools and a handful of broken music boxes. After that I headed to the workshop.

I started by extending the jaw. I did this by passing thin slabs of metal through the zygomatic bone and screwing them into the skull. To create the sinister teeth I used a dremel and more pieces of thin metal. With the main features complete, The next step was to add details.

Three bike gears were embedded in the back of the skull, again using the dremel to easily carve through the thin plastic. Plastic was nice to work with because it could be cut effortlessly but still held together. Two music boxes were installed behind the sinister teeth, one of which still works. If you twist the handle, it will play a creepy broken tune.

The finishing touch was added with a coat of patina. I applied a metallic paint and then coated sections with a rusting agent which brought the patina it to life. time teeth would fall off the skull but I didn't mind because it revealed the rusty music box hiding beneath.
