What are you afraid of? I try to have a conversation with the city of New York through the power of fears we all can relate to.
I hand silkscreened over 50 posters with fears of friends and my own. My intentions were to spread these posters over the city and see how / if people reacted to them. And for a brief moment I got to test this. But upon showing the video to my professor he presented the infamous question, "Shouldn't the font be more bold?" And he was right. All of a sudden the posters I had spent a semester printing were not suitable for my street application. So I needed another idea. . .
This idea came from my exploration of an abandoned garage in my area. The cathedral like main hall had the perfect wall to create an incredible installation and performance piece. I planned to hang the posters using spray adhesive and paint the letters "AFRAID" with an ultrawide spray can. The hanging process went incredibly smoothly, almost too smoothly. I sprayed the letters but miraculously I messed up the most important part. Not only did things not go to plan, but soon after COVID-19 struck, sealing me off from this location and preventing me from finishing the project. All of a sudden the trivial phrases pertaining to our social atmosphere seemed meaningless as humanity on Earth was threatened by this omnipresent virus.
